MTNL seeks 51% stake in TelOne

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE MTNL is seeking 51% stake in Zimbabwe's state-owned landline operator, TelOne. The funds will be routed through its Mauritius arm, Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius Ltd (MTML). Saddled with sizeable debt, TelOne is scouting for a strong overseas partner to enter the mobile turf. This will be MTNL's second attempt to enter Africa - in 2006, the telco failed to bag a mobile licence in Kenya and a year later it lost out in its attempts to buy a controlling stake in Telkom Kenya. IMTNL-Mauritius is working closely with the Information & Communication Technology Authority (ICTA) - the apex telecoms regulator in Mauritius - to hasten its Africa plans. Oracle to target large enterprises in India

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE Oracle will harness Exadata, its flagship database product for data warehousing and online transaction processing (OLTP) as the cornerstone of its 'Go to Market' strategy in India in FY 2011-12. Cisco to eliminate 11,500 jobs

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE Cisco Systems plans to eliminate about 6,500 jobs, or 9 per cent of its full-time workforce, to help trim $1 billion in annual costs and step up profit growth. Cisco stated that the cuts include 2,100 employees who took a voluntary early-retirement program. As part of the move, the company expects to record pretax restructuring expenses of $1.3 billion. About $750 million will come in the fiscal fourth quarter and the remainder will be booked in fiscal 2012. Cisco also added it will sell a manufacturing plant in Mexico, transferring 5,000 workers. Beetel to launch Tablet PC next month

It will be sold at a very affordable price," Rahul Mahajan, Head of Mobile Business of Beetel Teletech, said. Refusing to indicate likely price of the tablet, he said "The Company would roll out more tablets in the subsequent months. It would also launch Android and touch phones next month". The company would also set up exclusive retail outlets besides building a distribution network across the country." Infosys plans campus in Gujarat

N R Narayan Murthy, Chairman & Chief Mentor, Infosys said, "We are yet to get land, once the Gujarat government takes a decision, and I am sure that they will, we would look at the possibility of starting a centre here." The Infosys mentor is to meet the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and is likely to discuss the company's plans to set up a centre in the state. "A senior executive of Infosys has met us on a couple of occasions to explore the possibility of setting up a centre here. IBM offers more jobs in Philippines then India

According to the data revealed in a survey, there are 350,000 employed in call centres in the Philippines, compared to India's 330,000. Last year, the business in the Philippines earned about 6.5 billion pounds and that figure is projected to rise to 16.5 billion by 2016. The large number of young fluent English speakers who naturally talk with an American accent is one of the key reasons that have allowed the Philippines to overtake India. The country also provides the advantage of low labour costs, as a call centre shift pays just 13.20 pounds. Foxconn reportedly lands 10.1-inch Tablet PC Orders from Amazon

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE Foxconn Electronics has reportedly landed orders for 10.1-inch tablet PCs from Amazon with shipments to begin in 2012, while Quanta Computer has begun shipping a 7-inch model to Amazon. Foxconn declined to comment on market speculation. Foxconn has been producing the Kindle e-book readers for Amazon and is, therefore, able to land tablet PC orders also from Amazon, according to sources at the tablet supply chain. In addition to the new tablet PC orders, Foxconn currently is also likely to produce 12 million units of Kindles for Amazon, and 38-40 million units of iPads as well as 80-85 million iPhones for Apple a year, the sources indicated. Amazon is outsourcing the production of touch sensors to Wintek, with total purchasing volume to top 1.8-2 million units before the end of September.
