VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE   DataWind  has announced the completion of 100,000  Aakash low-cost computing access devices  for IIT-Bombay (under the Indian Government's Ministry of Human Resources Development's National Mission for Education through Information Communication Technology).  The project won by DataWind in an open and transparent international tender for the supply of Aakash1 devices at $49.98, was subsequently modified to 98,000 Aakash2 devices and 2,000 devices with DataWind’s recommendations for Aakash3, all at a price of Rs.2,263 (currently $41.61). The Aakash2 devices are the low-cost computing access devices, delivered to IIT-Bombay with 12 months warranty and accessories at only Rs.2,263 (competitively featured tablets are available in the Indian market for around Rs.5,000). Following are the excerpts of the claims made by Datawind… IIT-Rajasthan showed an unethical conduct All throughout the product cycle of Aakash, Datawind kept sending them units that met their specifications, which they kept rejecting until they were satisfied with one of them and placed an order for 8,000 units. But later on in spite of placing purchase order they came up with a set of highly unscientific test criteria without prior intimation. "They plagiarized military-ruggedized test criteria from HP laptops and told us to create a cheap tablet that could resist 4 inches per hour of rain and 20G of force, which as you can imagine is quite impossible considering the time and price," Tuli shared. 14 lakh Aakash tablets booked in 14 days

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE Datawind has announced that they have received 14 lakh orders for their Aakash Tablet in within just 14 days. They have claimed to grossly underestimate the demand for this 7 inch resistive touchscreen tablet with a measly 366 MHz processor. Within 14 days, 14 lakh orders (1.4 million) have been placed online, which is a lakh orders per day. According to market buzz, Datawind does not have the necessary manufacturing capacity nor the necessary logistics and supply chain to fulfill this demand. Currently, they have one manufacturing plant in Hyderabad. It is believed that to fulfill the 14 lakh orders that have been placed so far, it is said to take 70 days. As per the industry report, The Government of India has also demanded Datawind to be ready with the next lot of 90,000 tablets to be distributed to the educational institutes. Online booking is for students' version of the tablet and pre booking is for UbiSlate 7, the upgraded version of Aakash. The commercial version of Aakash tablet is believed to be powered by Android 2.3 and is said to have a resistive touchscreen, Cortex A8-700 MHz processor and graphics accelerator HD video processor, 256 MB of RAM and 2 GB of internal memory. One standard USB port, 3.5 mm audio jack, a 7 inch display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, resistive touchscreen, GPRS and WiFi support are other specifications.
