Baidu to shutdown Shuoba in late August

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE Baidu Inc is to shut down its Twitter-like microblogging platform, Shuoba, on Aug 22. Kaiser Kuo, a Baidu spokesman, declined to give a reason for the closure but industry experts chalked up Shuoba's stringent real name verification features as the reason the service failed to gain much traction with China's netizens. Shuoba competes with Sina's highly popular microblogging service Weibo which has over 140 million users. The firm posted a notice on Shuoba's website claiming that due to business adjustments, Shuoba was shutting down and urged users to back up their personal data. Although Twitter and Facebook are inaccessible in China, Chinese Internet companies have filled the void with similar microblogging and social networking products. Vudu unveils video-streaming on iPad

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE Wal-Mart Stores Inc's Vudu has unveiled video-streaming service on Apple Inc's iPad, but it doesn't come with the type of app that's common on the best-selling tablet computer. Wal-Mart said iPad users can now go to vudu.com to buy or rent 20,000 movies and TV episodes to watch instantly. Once bought or rented, the videos can be viewed online or through more than 300 devices including Internet-capable HDTVs, Blu-ray Disc players and the Sony's PlayStation 3. Vudu icon can be put on the iPad home screen, but when users touch it, they will be taken to Vudu's website to buy content, Wal-Mart claimed. Such services often come with an app that lets iPad users access content directly from the tablet's home screen. Facebook intros mobile messaging application

Facebook Engineer Lucy Zhang claims Facebook Messenger can be used to exchange messages with Facebook friends but also with other people in a user's telephone contact list. Facebook said Messenger also has location- and photo-sharing features. Messenger integrates text messages, instant messages and emails. Zhang said, "When you're on the go, coordinating a bunch of people can be tricky, especially if plans change at the last minute. With Messenger, you can quickly start a group conversation and message everyone at once. If you choose to add your location, the people you're messaging with can easily find each other on the map. Gaana.com brings iPad version in HTML5

PayPal to offer 200 new jobs in Dublin

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE PayPal is to offer a further 200 jobs in Dublin in a new wave of recruitment that follows the addition of 150 new roles at the Blanchardstown facility earlier this year. The firm says the new roles will support its fast growing European business which contributed to PayPal achieving its first ever $1 billion revenue quarter in Q2 2011. The company is opening permanent positions in customer service, risk operations, financial operations, sales and account management for individuals fluent in English and a second European language. IBM announces SUR Awards
