The state government has invited Microsoft to set up a facility in West Bengal and promised necessary "support and infrastructure" to the company. Partha Chatterjee, the state IT Minister said, "We need to have you (Microsoft) in the State and we assure you that our Chief Minister will provide all the necessary support to help you set up a facility here." He was speaking in a seminar on IT organised by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce. Bhaskar Pramanik, Microsoft India chairman, was present on the occasion. Karbonn to launch Tablet PC by Oct

The search giant tried to acquire patents from bankrupt phone equipment maker Nortel Networks in April but lost its bidding war with Apple, Microsoft and other rivals. NASSCOM: TCS is the largest recruiter

The rankings reveal a surge in hiring, with almost one third of the industry aiming to grow by 25 per cent, and a little over two-third of the industry planning to increase their employee base by 10 per cent in the coming year. The total percentage of women hiring reached more than 40 per cent in the last three years. Tata Consultancy Services has emerged as the largest recruiter over the last year, followed by Infosys and Wipro Technologies. However, the cost of hiring has declined over the last three years for almost half of the industry, as a result of increased referrals, campus placements and internal job postings. Hiring from tier-III cities has also increased over the last year. Microsoft India penalised for customs duty evasion

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE Customs and Central Excise Settlement Commission has imposed a fine of Rs. 2 crore on Microsoft India and Rs. 10,000 on its former chairman Ravi Venkatesan in a case of customs duty evasion involving sale of its software in India. The commission has collected customs duty, fine and interest of Rs. 255 crore from nine information technology companies which imported the software. Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had issued showcause notices to the companies in 2008-09. The companies approached the commission and settled the cases so that no criminal prosecution could be initiated. DRI said, MS India split the sale transactions into two parts but paid customs duty only on one component where the rates were nominal. The first transaction related to the import of software and the second pertained to licence, granting customers the right to use the software. DRI said the importers had under-declared the prices of software to customs and su

Home Minister P Chidambaram has asked the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) to frame policies which will allow services to be intercepted whenever the need arises. Rubbishing the charges that his ministry was rigid with BlackBerry, on the issue of interception, he said that the Government's policies are not vendor specific. P Chidambaram further said, "The Government must be able to intercept whenever required. The DoT should ensure that if security considerations arise, we have the right to intercept and there is a way to intercept. Rubbishing the charges that his ministry was rigid with BlackBerry, on the issue of interception, he said that the Government's policies are not vendor specific. P Chidambaram further said, "The Government must be able to intercept whenever required. The DoT should ensure that if security considerations arise, we have the right to intercept and there is a way to intercept. DoT will disclose how to intercept ensuring that the intercepted material is not misused. The Government is looking to access the message or the data that is passed."

As per market buzz, the manufacturer: Fujitsu-Toshiba plans to bring the device to Japanese stores and carriers in September. It's not expected to come to the U.S. The phone, known as the IS12T will be the first device to run the major revamp of the Windows Phone operating system to version 7.5, an update codenamed "Mango." HCL Tech Profit escalates 52%

HCL said consolidated profit rose to Rs.511 crore for April-June, compared with a profit of Rs.337 crore a year ago. Revenue rose 27.5 per cent to Rs.4,300 crore, on an average exchange rate basis. A media poll of brokerages showed analysts expected profit to rise 45 per cent to Rs.494 crore, on the revenue of Rs.4,318 crore. HCL, which follows a July-June fiscal, however, raises wages only in its fiscal first quarter, enabling it to post better margins compared to peers. HCL, which added 3,626 employees on a net basis during April - June, said the operating margin was almost flat at 18.5 per cent for the period.
