Online retailers now go ‘offline’

While most of the retail chains in the country are now scurrying to open online stores to cash in on the e-commerce boom in country, firms like MakeMyTrip, CarTrade, FirstCry and Lenskart are planning to build their offline presence with brick and mortar stores to woo more consumers. This is a strategy to reach out to people who still do not have access to Internet. According to reports, about 85% of the market is going to remain offline even after five years. Online shopping is convenient but it does not give that touch and feel experience, which customers would specially want. The prices of online and offline however are the same. For instance, while online travel firm MakeMyTrip has opened 18 company-owned stores in the recent past, baby and kids product portal Firstcry has taken its tally to more than 100 stores across the country... The online retailer may add at least eight people in the next one year to its newly reorganized senior leadership team. The fresh 2.5% ESOPs provision is on top of about 4.35% of capital already set aside for Flipkart employees and 1.1% for employees of Myntra. Flipkart is expected to have set a side $875million out of its estimated $11 billion valuation towards ESOPs. Now check air quality in Pune & Delhi with SAFAR–Air app

The ministry of earth sciences (MoES) has launched a smartphone app called ‘SAFAR-Air’ to provide the real-time air quality to people. It also provides a forecast for the next two days and a health advisory along with a colour coded grading of air quality in different city zones. The app can be downloaded for free either from Google Play store or the MoES and the System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) websites. In Delhi, the app will provide air quality for east, north, south, west and central Delhi. In Pune, the app will cover urban, suburban and two other zones. A similar monitoring for Mumbai is going to be launched in April. App users can also compare the levels in these cities.   see more

Microsoft launches Lumia 435 and Lumia 532

Microsoft corp. has launched two smartphone, Lumia 435 and Lumia 532 at Rs 5,999 and Rs 6,499 respectively which is affordable to the customers. Both smartphones come with latest Windows Phone 8.1 operating system, Microsoft’s Office suite including Word, Outlook for email, Skype, and up to 30GB of free cloud storage. The features of Lumia 435 include a four-inch display and a modest two-megapixel front camera. The more expensive 532 features the same display but includes a more powerful camera and access to some high-speed networks, and dual SIM for using more than one phone number. Both the phones come with 30GB free OneDrive cloud storage offered by Microsoft and also with Micro SD slot with a storage capacity of upto 128GB. Google India launches Web Rangers campaign for safer web

Google India has announced the launch of Web Rangers as part of The India Digital Literacy and Internet Safety Campaign.  This is a program that empowers teens to promote the safe use of the Internet among their peers.  Web Rangers will provide training to help teens create their cyber safety campaign to enable themselves and their peers think about their online behavior and how to keep each other safe online.  The program will take young people aged between 14 -17, representing 50 schools in Hyderabad, Bangalore and New Delhi through training workshops that will equip them with knowledge in online safety. This program also introduces a contest where students across the country will be given twelve weeks to create and run their own online safety campaigns. Sales of wearable devices to reach 394 million units in 2020- Ovum

As per Ovum, the wearables market will be worth US$27bn in 2020, with almost 400 million wearable devices sold in the year. Ovum expects sales of wearable devices to reach 394 million units in 2020, up from 24 million units in 2014, corresponding to a CAGR of 60%. Revenues generated from the direct sale of wearable devices to consumers will reach US$26.6bn in 2020, up from US$3bn in 2014. Multipurpose wearables such as the Apple Watch will account for 31% of the installed base, with simple activity trackers and smart clothes making up the rest of the market. Wearables also offer additional software revenue opportunities via a dedicated app ecosystem that will serve up to 176 million installed devices by the end of 2020. 20–30 cities to come under elite club of Smart Cities

Under the flagship scheme of PM Modi’s initiative to make 100 Indian cities as a smart city, the Centre has planned to take up 20–30 cities to develop them into smart cities this year. The cities to be revamped should meet certain requirements.  To begin with, the government is planning to create a colony or commercial area of around 50 acres in the vicinity of the city with smart features so that the success model will make people aware and more areas can be developed with people’s participation. As per the concept note, there will be three approaches – retrofitting, redevelopment and greenfield development. Under the retrofitting scheme, a city can undertake an area of minimum 500 acres and can implement the scheme in three years. Under a redevelopment scheme, a 50- acre area can be taken as a model. Microsoft has announced that its Word, Excel and Powerpoint will be available for free in Android based tablets. It also released an app for its popular Outlook email program to run on Apple’s iPhone and iPad, hoping to attract the millions of users familiar with Outlook from their work desktops. For almost three months Microsoft has been offering the test versions of the Office apps on Android but the announcement marks the availability of finished products from the online Google Play app store. It is a part of company’s strategy and Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella attempts towrest back the initiative in the battle for mobile users, where Microsoft has fallen behind Apple and Google Inc. Paytm plans to add one lakh merchants and hire 4,500 employees

Noida based mobile payment wallet Paytm is aggressively planning to ramp up its mobile marketplace by adding over one lakh merchants in one year. It is also planning to rope in 4,500 people across various verticals. Paytm started as a mobile recharge and bill payment service, is now into wallets and other electronic payment services with RBI-licensed wallet. The company plans to hire 4,500 across verticals and also focusing on SMEs. Presently, Paytm, is owned by Noida based One97 Communications and headed by Chairman and MD Vijay Shekhar Sharma. Rs. 3,705 crore approved as Base Price for 3G Auction by Cabinet

The Cabinet has fixed the starting price at Rs 3,705 crore per MHz for the auction of 3G spectrum which is slated to start on  March 4 . By this the government is aiming to earn a net profit of Rs 17,555 crore. However, operators are afraid that the high starting level could drive up voice and data tariffs. The winners of the auction will have to make an upfront payment of 33% of the final bid amount to the government within 10 days of the close of the bandwidth sale. Rest amount can be paid after a moratorium of two years in 10 equal installments. A 5 MHz block of 2100 MHz airwaves typically used for 3G services will be offered in all service areas except Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Punjab. Thus, a total of 85 MHz in 17 service areas is being put to auction. New Trojans on Google Play affect 25,000 devices: reveal Dr. Web's analysts

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE   As per a latest update,  Dr.Web  has discovered several malicious programs on Google Play that install  Android.SmsSend Trojans  on mobile devices. The Trojans send short messages to premium numbers and deplete subscriber accounts. Google was promptly notified about the incident. The programs,  discovered by Doctor Web's analysts , belong to the Vietnamese developer AppStore Jsc. They are disguised as audio players and a video player that displays adult content. The total number of installations of these programs ranges between 11,000 and 25,000. These applications appear harmless. However, they incorporate an extra apk-file that contains an Android.SmsSend Trojan. While running these carrier applications,  dubbed Android.MulDrop , Android.MulDrop.1, and Android.MulDrop.2 by Dr.Web, can prompt the user to download the content they need, but their consent initiates the installation of another applicat...
