WD announces Q2 results

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE Western Digital Corp. has reported revenue of $2.0 billion, hard-drive unit shipments of 28.5 million and net income of $145 million, or $0.61 per share, for its second fiscal quarter ended Dec. 30, 2011. Excluding charges and expenses related to the Thailand flooding and the planned acquisition of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST), non-GAAP net income was $358 million, or $1.51 per share. During the quarter, the company incurred charges and expenses of $199 million related to the flooding and expenses of $14 million associated with the planned acquisition of HGST. In the year-ago quarter, the company reported revenue of $2.5 billion, net income of $225 million, or $0.96 per share, and shipped 52.2 million hard drives. The company generated $378 million in cash from operations during the December quarter, ending with total cash and cash equivalents of $3.9 billion. NTT Com to buy 74% stake in Netmagic Solutions

Paul Maritz, CEO, VMware said, "The quarter's strong performance further signals that virtualization is the foundation for simplifying and automating IT. As customers continue to drive significant IT transformation, our task remains in providing solutions that go beyond cost reduction, yielding business and competitive value." It is recorded that revenues for the fourth quarter were $1.06 billion, an increase of 27% from the fourth quarter of 2010, and an increase of 26% measured in constant currency. Operating income for the fourth quarter was $214 million, an increase of 64% from the fourth quarter of 2010. Non-GAAP operating income for the fourth quarter was $338 million, an increase of 37% from the fourth quarter of 2010. Creative Livelihood and Youth (CLAY), a programme jointly developed with NGO partner LEARN (Labour Education and Research Network) is believed to build capacities of domestic workers, home based workers, garment and embellishment workers. The program includes training in tailoring and fashion designing, marketing and basic accounting, housekeeping, spoken English and leadership development. LEARN is expected to identify women workers and their daughters for enrolment, as well as facilitate the entire training process, while SAP India claims to provide financial support and guidance for the programme.
