AMD acquires wireless virtual reality IP player Nitero

AMD has acquired intellectual property (IP) and key engineering talent from Nitero, a pioneer in millimeter wave solutions capable of enabling future generations of wireless Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) headsets.  The acquisition provides AMD with a broader portfolio of IP capable of enabling VR headset and solution providers with key technology required to create more immersive computing experiences.  “Unwieldly headset cables remain a significant barrier to drive widespread adoption of VR,” said Mark Papermaster, AMD chief technology officer and senior vice president. “Our newly acquired wireless VR technology is focused on solving this challenge, and is another example of AMD making long-term technology investments to develop high-performance computing and graphics technologies that can create more immersive computing experiences,” added Papermaster.... Technology leaders tie up over Open Acceleration Framework to Data Centers

To bring a high-performance open acceleration framework to data centers, Advanced Micro Devices, ARM, Huawei, IBM, Mellanox, Qualcomm Technologies Inc., and Xilinx, Inc. have collaborated. The companies are collaborating on the specification for the new Cache Coherent Interconnect for Accelerators (CCIX).  A single interconnect technology specification will ensure that processors using different  instruction set architectures (ISA) can coherently share data with accelerators and enable efficient heterogeneous computing – significantly improving compute efficiency for servers running data center workloads. “AMD strongly supports development of open standards to make heterogeneous computing more pervasive. AMD holds top position in Thin Clients space

AMD has achieved a number-one market share position for thin clients based on its thin-client shipments. According to its unit sales to thin-client customers last year, AMD has more than half of that market, with 53-per cent market share. AMD thin-client solutions continue to gain market adoption because of the move to cloud-based computing. Increasingly, thin clients are also being used for more complex and high- performance tasks. This is especially true for devices incorporating x86 CPUs and sophisticated graphics.
