In a recent report released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) ,The total telephone subscriber base in the country rose marginally in March to 105.88 cr. on the back of growth in wireless as well as wireline users. The overall user base stood at 105.18 cr. at the end of February.The wireless subscriber base increased by 0.68% to 103.36 crore at the end of March, from 102.66 crore last month. As for the wireline, the subscriber base arrested its decline and rose marginally to 2.522 crore at the end of March, from 2.521 crore in February. The overall tele-density in the country went up to 83.36% at the end of March, from 82.89% last month. The urban tele-density grew to 154.01% and rural tele-density to 51.37%. In the wireless space, private access service providers held 91.30% market share whereas BSNL and MTNL accounted for only 8.70%.In wire line though, the two state-run companies enjoy a market share of 72.42% while private operators’ stood at 27.58%...

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE MTNL has initiated and redefined Broadband services ahead of Telecom policy that, minimum download speed for Broadband customers is said to now be 512 Kbps in place of 256 Kbps. Peeyush Agrawal, Executive Director, MTNL Mumbai announced this initiative to be introduced from Republic Day. With this initiative all customers having broadband plans with download speed less than 512 Kbps are expected to be automatically upgraded to 512 Kbps download speed, without any additional charges. He further added, "This customer friendly step has been proactively initiated by MTNL to give the customers faster broadband experience without any extra charges." VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) is to finalise two private companies, Tata Teleservices and Aircel, for 3G roaming agreements in the Delhi and Mumbai circles, as per industry report. According to the report, this deal with the tele-companies is expected to bring the state-owned telecom company an additional annual Rs. 250-300 crore. It will help in improving its financial situation. Sources reveal that the final stage of the deal has been approved. Kuldeep Singh, Chairman & MD, MTNL said, "We are in discussions with both of Tata Teleservices and Aircel. The final deal will be announced soon." MTNL and BSNL, were awarded 3G spectrum a year ahead of the auction for private companies. MTNL had to cancel the earlier tender due to some regulatory issues, which is why it had invited bids from private service providers for this in June last year. The funds will be routed through its Mauritius arm, Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius Ltd (MTML). Saddled with sizeable debt, TelOne is scouting for a strong overseas partner to enter the mobile turf. This will be MTNL's second attempt to enter Africa - in 2006, the telco failed to bag a mobile licence in Kenya and a year later it lost out in its attempts to buy a controlling stake in Telkom Kenya. (MTNL) plans to share its passive infrastructure, including towers, with private service providers as part of its efforts to boost revenue and put the state-owned company back in the black in two years. MTNL, which offers services in Delhi and Mumbai, has about 1,400 towers and plans to add 700 more this financial year. It had reported a loss of around Rs.2,800 crore for 2010-11. According to sources, MTNL had invited expression of interest (EoI) for sharing of base transceiver stations (BTSs) and other passive infrastructure in Delhi. Subsequently, an EoI for sharing of BTS sites in Mumbai would be called. The company had earlier shared some of its BTS sites with other service providers on an experimental basis.
