"Sharing Facebook passwords is dangerous"

ESET warns Indian companies against the practice of asking job interviewers and current employees to share Facebook or other online credentials. It may harm company's reputation and open it up to serious liability, both corporate and individual.

Recently Facebook's Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan has announced that Facebook had seen an increase in reports of employers or others seeking to gain access to people's Facebook and that can lead to "initiating legal action" against employers that demand Facebook passwords from the social networking company.

"India has second largest number of facebook and LinkedIn users in the world, after US. However Indian cyber privacy laws are not as developed as in some other countries, so despite Facebook's and even some US lawmakers concern about this issue, which is a good trend in whole, in India the scenario can be worse. Considering the poor cyber security awareness among most of Indian Facebook users, and the level of competition for good-level jobs, Indian users might easily share their credentials with potential employers expecting to get the position. Well, personally would never agree to ask for such credentials from employees," said Pankaj Jain, Director, ESET India.
