Microsoft also targeted of Massive SolarWinds Hack: Microsoft’s systems were exposed as part of the suspected Russian cybersecurity hack that targeted SolarWinds and hit multiple government agencies, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.
The latest cyber-assault is effectively an attack on the United States and its government and other critical institutions, including security firms,” Smith wrote in the blog post. It illuminates the ways the cybersecurity landscape continues to evolve and become even more dangerous.
Microsoft’s own products were used to further attacks on other victims by leveraging its cloud offerings. It is unclear how many Microsoft users were affected.
Microsoft president Brad Smith warned that the wide-ranging hack of the SolarWinds’ Orion IT software is “ongoing,” and that investigations reveal “an attack that is remarkable for its scope, sophistication and impact.”
The Windows maker, however, denied the threat actor had infiltrated its production systems to stage further attacks against its customers.
There are more than 40 customers that the attackers targeted more precisely and compromised through additional and sophisticated measures,” according to Smith. Approximately 80 percent of those customers are located in the US, but Microsoft also identified victims in Canada, Mexico, Belgium, Spain, the UK, Israel, and the UAE. “It’s certain that the number and location of victims will keep growing,” as per Smith .
