Cisco launches Jabber

Cisco has introduced a new collaboration service from its enterprise social network, Quad called Jabber. It is a messaging app that brings together telepresence, IM, voice and video, voicemail, desktop sharing and conferencing into one product that will be available across a whole range of desktop and mobile devices like PC, Mac, tablets and smartphones.

The service will come out for Mac personal computers first. Users can also use Jabber to transfer phone calls from one device to the next, such as from a mobile phone to a home phone. Cisco is also launching the service on the iPad and its own tablet, the Cius. The service is also coming to iPhone, BlackBerry and devices running Google's Android and Nokia's Symbian mobile operating system.

The app is based on the XMPP messaging protocol, which means that it is compatible with many other XMPP-compatible IM services, including GTalk, AIM and Sametime. Cisco Jabber can be deployed across on-premise and cloud-based options.
