CELKON to set up Rs 100-Crore Handset Assembly Unit

CELKON Mobiles, an Indian mobile handset brand, will set up a Rs.100-crore mobile assembly unit in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu or Karnataka in 2011 with a capacity to produce 36 lakh pieces annually. It also lined up an Android phone to mark its entry into the smartphone segment.

Y. Guru, Managing Director, CELKON, said that they will pool up funds internally and from banks to set up the facility and that they are in talks with the local governments in this regard.

In about 12 months, the company sold 10 lakh units, mostly in Andhra Pradesh and registered a turnover of Rs.150 crore. "We have entered into a tie-up with the US-based Bright Point to distribute our handsets in North India," he said.

Addressing a press conference, he said the company would initially sell the products in States like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi and Uttarakhand. From July, it would start selling in Maharashtra and West Bengal markets, too.
