Electric Rickshaws to run in Kolkata now

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is all set to introduce electric rickshaws in Kolkata. Speaking about this plan, Samir K. Brahmachari, DG, CSIR said, "We will initially launch 50 electric rickshaws that can be powered by storage batteries. Only after the trial is conducted will the project be taken further. The proposed innovation complex project of the CSIR in Baruipur was expected to commence soon. The complex will act as a hub for technology and connect with clusters to promote technology companies."

These battery-powered rickshaws have been running successfully in North India. Now the CSIR wishes to introduce them in West Bengal as well. CSIR is planning to launch these rickshaws on 2 October 2011 as seed project before a business model is rolled out.

The process had already begun and in near future a regional innovation council will be formed under the National Innovation Council to promote local innovations.
