IT Companies hiring Non-Engineers
Companies such as TCS, Cognizant, ITC Infotech and HCL are hiring non-engineer graduates. Although Wipro was ahead of the curve, several companies now have started differentiating the job of a software engineer into several roles like testing, technical support and even coding and programming that can easily be performed by non-engineers.
TCS announced hiring of science and commerce graduates from this year, ITC Infotech says 20 per cent of its tech hires will be non-engineers, and Wipro will have about 35-40 per cent of the new hires from the non-engineering stream.
A HCL spokesperson commented, "There has been a marginal increase in their hiring of BSc and BCA graduates. The criterion for hiring is not only academic excellence, but based on computer-based test covering logical, quantitative and verbal skills and also direct interviews."
"About 90 per cent of the jobs in the top five software companies in the country can easily be performed by an MCA or an MSc in computer science. Although engineers are needed for jobs like embedded design, firmware and VLSI design. I foresee the ratio going up to 50:50 (science graduates to engineers) soon," C Mahalingam, Executive VP & Chief People Officer, Symphony Services said.
"Although this practice started three years back, the trend has gathered momentum now. It's just a way of augmenting your supply and creating an alternate pool of talent," S Muralidhar, Co-founder and CEO of assessment firm MeritTrac Services stated.
