Tata Teleservices to combine CDMA, GSM businesses

Tata Teleservices (TTSL) is reportedly planning to merge its CDMA and GSM divisions, following a similar exercise by India's largest telecom company Bharti Airtel. The restructuring also raises fears of job losses in an industry confronting issues like slowing growth and high marketing spends amid cut-price tariffs. The unified structure could end up making job positions redundant at the company.

The move, as per the report, will also collapse all circles under four regional heads: Vineet Bhatia (West and Upper North), Mahesh Thampi (East and UP), Yatish Mehrotra (South) and Ajit Chaturvedi (Delhi and Rajasthan). They will be reporting to Deepak Gulati, President, who is in charge of mobility nation-wide.

If two search firms (which track the telecom sector) are to be believed, nearly 8,000 jobs across mobile companies will be cut by 2011-end as more firms streamline operations to respond to market dynamics faster. Earlier this month, Bharti Airtel announced a new organisation structure for its operations in India and South Asia, which will be effective starting 1 August 2011. The aim is to drive greater business and functional synergies, providing a common interface to customers, and creating a de-layered and more agile organisation.

DoT Secretary hints at making Draft NTP 2018 available in public domain soon

“A draft National Telecom Policy 2018 that is liberal and non-prescriptive in its licensing approach in Machine to Machine (M2M) communication is being given final touches. The policy should be in the public domain in the next two to three weeks for discussion and responses from stakeholders,” said Aruna Sundararajan, Secretary, Department of Telecom, Ministry of Communications. Aruna Sundararajan said, “M2M is the next big opportunity for India in terms of its impact and the quantum change that it will bring about in the quality of services and delivery.
