Karbonn plans mobile manufacturing unit in Chennai

Karbonn Mobiles has plans to set up its first manufacturing unit in the country. The company will invest about Rs. 70 crore for this. Karbonn presently gets its phones manufactured by Foxconn in Taiwan and China. The company sources some of its models from Korea.

Sudhir Hasija, Chairman, Karbonn Mobiles, said, "The Company will manufacture 60 per cent of its products in the unit to be set in India. Once the things get stabilised in this unit, we would like to have all its products made here. We are considering Chennai and also Bangalore. Out of the two cities, Chennai seems better for logistics."

According to the sources Karbonn has approached the Tamil Nadu Government and the talks for setting up the unit are in preliminary stages. Micromax is also considering setting up shop in Chennai.

Chennai also houses some of the biggest EMS (electronics manufacturing services) companies - Foxconn, Flextronics and Sanmina. These companies today service Nokia and their expertise in supplying to a handset manufacturer is what Karbonn would want to tap.
