Sony signs LTO-6 Licence Agreement

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE

Sony Corporation's Storage Media Division has signed an LTO-6 licence agreement with the Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Program Technology Provider Companies (TPCs) consisting of HP, IBM and Quantum. This agreement now allows Sony to start developing its own LTO-6 Ultrium media.

The LTO-6 tape technology is aimed at supporting the ever-increasing storage capacity requirements of today's data rich storage environments. Each cartridge will be able to store up to an estimated 3.2TB native (8TB 2.5:1 compressed) data. This new generation of LTO Ultrium format will also deliver an impressive data transfer rate of up to 210MB/s native (525MB/s 2.5:1 compressed).

Although LTO-6 tape technology is still in development and final specifications are not yet available, the TPCs have opened the opportunity for licensees to begin development. Sony is ready and eager to sign on and continue to support the LTO format. Not only will Sony start the development of LTO-6 Ultrium media, but it will also start delivering newly manufactured Generations 1 to 5 products into the Asia-Pacific market within CY11 Q4.
