Qualcomm invites LTE Promoters to sell its BWA Stake

Qualcomm has reconfirmed that it will sell its Indian broadband wireless access (BWA) business to any company that assures long- erm evolution (LTE) technology in India.

Talking on the sidelines of the CTIA Wireless conference, Qualcomm Senior Vice-President - Global Marketing Investor Relations, BillDavidson said that the company's strategy was to ensure LTE technology platform took off in the Indian market and to find the right partners for the same.

Recently, Qualcomm has announced that it is in an advanced stage of talks with Bharti Airtel to sell its BWA licences in India. QualcommIndia, which took part in the BWA auction last year, got licences for four markets, including the lucrative Delhi and Mumbai, apart froKerala and Haryana. The company paid a total of Rs.4,912 crore and might seek a premium over this from Bharti. At present, Bharti has BWA licences for Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kolkata and Punjab.

Qualcomm pioneered Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology, which is used by several mobile phone companies such as Tata Teleservices, Reliance Communications and Sistema-Shyam in India . Qualcomm confirms that it does not want to be an operator, but was only blocking the spectrum to jump-start demand for its 4G chips.
