IBM tops 2011 India Supercomputers List

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE IBM has announced that it has emerged as the leader in the recently released India's Top Supercomputers list for 2011, complied and published by Supercomputer Education and Research Centre (SERC) Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Of the sixteen installations featured by SERC, IBM topped the list with six high-performance computing (HPC) installations across India. These include IBM Blue Gene Solutions at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, as well as IBM Power 6 cluster solutions at the India Meteorological Department, Delhi and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad SERC has been compiling and publishing the Top Supercomputers list in India since December 2008. This year, there were a total of sixteen entries in the list with minimum performance criteria over 3.11 TFlops. CELKON to set up Rs 100-Crore Handset Assembly Unit

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE CELKON Mobiles, an Indian mobile handset brand, will set up a Rs.100-crore mobile assembly unit in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu or Karnataka in 2011 with a capacity to produce 36 lakh pieces annually. It also lined up an Android phone to mark its entry into the smartphone segment. Y. Guru, Managing Director, CELKON, said that they will pool up funds internally and from banks to set up the facility and that they are in talks with the local governments in this regard. In about 12 months, the company sold 10 lakh units, mostly in Andhra Pradesh and registered a turnover of Rs.150 crore. "We have entered into a tie-up with the US-based Bright Point to distribute our handsets in North India," he said. Addressing a press conference, he said the company would initially sell the products in States like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi and Uttarakhand. Kaspersky Lab releases Global IT Security Risks' Survey Report

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE Kaspersky Lab, in partnership with B2B International, a global research agency specializing in business research, has conducted a Global IT Security Risks Survey. The survey results highlight that 91% of companies have experienced at least one IT security event from an external source in the last 12 months. More than 1,300 IT professionals in 11 countries participated in the survey. The most common security threat comes in the form of viruses, spyware and other malicious programs. 31% of malware attacks resulted in some form of data loss, with 10% of companies reporting the loss of sensitive business data. Only 70% of companies have implemented anti-malware protection fully across their businesses; 3% have no protection at all. The level of anti-malware implementation varies from country to country: in emerging markets 65% of companies have adopted it, while in the UK and the US levels of implementation stood at 92% and 82%, respectively. Under this exercise, Bharti Airtel plans to merge its mobile, satellite TV (DTH), and fixed-line and broadband telemedia business, which jointly account for about 90% of the company's revenues and the vast majority of its workforce, into a single entity. The merger, apparently aimed at cutting costs and boosting efficiency at the country's biggest telecom operator at a time of falling profits, is expected to lead to big job losses, with estimates putting the number at more than 2,000. Nokia N9 smartphone not for India Launch

Salora forays into Mobile Handset Business

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE Salora International has joined its peers Videocon, LG and Samsung to foray into the multi-crore rupee Indian mobile handset business and plans to expand its product portfolio over the next few months. In the first phase, Salora plans to launch its handsets in eastern India, Delhi-NCR, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. "There are already a huge number of players, but we will look to differentiate our product on the basis of quality. We have a television business and people trust our brand, which will help us in the market," Salora International Managing Director Gopal Jiwarajka said. Apple takes away Intifada application after Israeli request

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE Apple Inc. has removed, at Israel's request, an Arabic-language application from its iTunes store that called for a Palestinian uprising. Public Diplomacy Minister Yuli-Yoel Edelstein has written to Apple, complaining that the "ThirdIntifada" application - a reference to a future uprising - conveyed information about protests, some violent, planned against Israel. A statement issued by Edelstein's ministry welcomed "Apple's swift action" in removing the application and praised the company's decision as "another important step in preventing violent incitement in the new media". A search for "ThirdIntifada" in the iTunes store found no matches. The application offered users a stream of news stories and editorials in Arabic, announced upcoming protests and included links to nationalistic Palestinian videos and songs. DNC to get redefined from August 15

VARINDIA- INDIA'S FRONTLINE IT MAGAZINE TRAI had announced the new rules regarding Do-Not-Call (DNC) last year under which telemarketers who call customers registered with DNC would face fines of Rs.75,000 for the first violation and up to Rs.2.5 lakh for the sixth offence, after which they would be blacklisted for a period of two years, but this had not been implemented so far. After a long wait, rules aimed to bring relief to millions of customers from pesky telemarketers and unwanted commercial text messages may be implemented from August 2011, finally. Close-to 100 million mobile phone users, or one in eight cellphone subscribers, had signed up under the old DNC introduced in 2007, but the regulator was forced to act after rampant complaints from users of its ineffectiveness. KDDI and Samsung plan to launch a commercial LTE service in 2012. During the past ten years with the close business relationship based on shared values, KDDI and Samsung have established the goal to provide a high-quality of product and service. On the same lines, KDDI and Samsung intend to provide differentiated LTE service to consumers as well. Samsung aims to introduce the industry's first and the most optimized LTE solution for hotspots in extremely dense user areas that require higher capacity mobile broadband, whilst simultaneously improving service quality in weak-signal areas. In India, Samsung is in talks with service providers to provide its LTE Solutions so that the Indian consumers can be provided with the complete experience of 4G services once the implementation schedules are worked out by the Indian service providers.

The search engine giant has already scanned 13 million books through partnerships with more than 40 libraries around the world, which it makes available through its search results. The British Library project involves a selection of books published between 1700 and 1870, including feminist pamphlets about Queen Marie-Antoinette and an account of a stuffed hippopotamus owned by the Prince of Orange. Google will bear the costs of digitization, and the items will then be available for full-text search, download and reading through Google Books as well as being searchable through the British Library's website and stored in its digital archive. Go Daddy targets to rival Amazon, Rackspace in the Cloud

Go Daddy claims to introduce a service called Data Center On Demand, a cloud hosting play and Infrastructure-as-a-Service offering. As per Go Daddy's user forums, "Data Center On Demand lets users create a virtual data center with multiple servers working together. This 'cloud' hosting option lets you dynamically grow or shrink your environment as needed. You have complete control over the number of servers you use and their configuration. Further, Go Daddy's Data Center On Demand also lets users add load balancers, multiple networks and create templates for their cloud environments." Shrek Virus hits a Dating Website

Sophos has questioned these claiming that a "Shrek" virus made it possible for "30,000 ugly people" to join the site, without going through the usual attractiveness approval process. Greg Hodge, MD of Beautiful People, said, "We got suspicious when tens of thousands of new members were accepted over a six-week period. We responded immediately, repairing the damage from the 'Shrek Virus' and putting every new member back into the rating module for a legitimate and democratic vote. Resulting in a loss of over 30,000 recent members, we have sincere regretted for the unfortunate people who were wrongly admitted to the site." TN State Government invites Tenders for supply of Free Laptops

The State-run Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (Elcot) has floated an international competitive tender for sourcing 9.12 lakh laptops in the first phase of the scheme, which is spread out over five years. Elcot hopes to provide training to handle the laptops. It is interesting to note that the Corporation has directed manufacturers to burn the State Government's logo on the chip so that it is displayed when the machine is switched on. "We have done this to prevent misuse of the laptops, such as unauthorized sale or diversion into the open market. The firms should incorporate on-screen display of the TN Government logo," an Elcot official told. "The design and layout approval should be obtained from Elcot before production," he said.
